About me
I am an American and grew up in Indianapolis, which is about 200 miles from Chicago and the 12th largest city in America, with a population of 1½ million. Living in the suburbs of a large city has given me the best of two worlds – city and country life. Indianapolis is a typical American city.

Even as a child, I had a gift for languages and an interest in other countries, especially Europe. When I was at primary school I found a programme for pen friends and decided to join. It wasn't long before I got letters from children in my age writing to me from all corners of the world. The letters opened my eyes to people and places, from which sprang my interest in languages.

After learning German for a year at high school, I was offered to go along with my German teacher to Germany. So I went to Europe for the first time that following summer and had such a wonderful time I wanted to go back again but as an exchange student. I went to Germany through the Rotary Youth Exchange Programme; a very interesting programme, in which student stay with three or four host families in one year, as to get a better image of life in the host country. I stayed in a small city called Warendorf and had such a great time that I had homesickness for Germany upon arriving back in Indianapolis. After high school I studied German at Indiana University, but the only opportunity after university being to teach German, I decided studying German was not for me.

I first became interested in teaching when I worked alongside Mexicans in the restaurant business. I saw how people could find their way through life easier in the United States if they had learnt English. And I wanted to be a part of helping these people. So I confronted some English-speaking Hispanics from work and enquired where they had been taught. I phoned Central Nine Career Center right away and found out through their English instructor that I could be trained at a school in Indianapolis. After accomplishing the certificate I went back to the vocational school and began to teach in the evenings. I had a great feeling from working with the students and it was so interesting to meet different people. The most wonderful part of it all was driving back home knowing that I had done something good for others.

Ever since the end of my school year in Germany I had had a longing to live back in Europe. Therefore I started to come in contact with friends in Warendorf and told them my idea of moving back and teaching English there. Some suggested, if I was serious about doing it, that I should obtain a European qualification. They also said it would be best to have a teaching certificate from England. After receiving my qualification from Cambridge University, I moved to Warendorf.

In the Westphalian small town and surroundings, I teach others my language. Businesses use my abilities and talent for languages. In in-house courses, through translations and as instructor, it always make me happy to be able to use my knowledge to help other.
